Hello. I’m Silas.

I'm a hands-on maker passionate about figuring out how things work. Yes, I can do math like any other mechanical engineer, but what differentiates me is that I am creative and a collaborator who can build anything. I dream of joining a supportive community of designers where we collaborate and innovate together.

I love building challenging things. After years of playing an acoustic guitar, I decided to craft my own, personalized for my playing style. I studied online tutorials, met with woodworkers, and engineered and hand-built my guitar from the ground up, including the electronics. My friend Luke, a Design and Mechanical Engineering major, showed me the campus maker spaces, filled with CNC mills, 3D printers, and workshops. Seeing the new EXP resources blew my mind and I can’t wait to create such an ambitious, supportive community.

I also love theater and media. I study improv comedy at The Groundlings School in Los Angeles, creating sketches with a troupe I founded. I also created a live podcast on Clubhouse, Play Me a Ditty, which I hosted, bringing musicians together to share a short song and talk about what it means to them. After talking to Jonny Ouk, manager of the Immersive Media Lab at Northeastern, I’m excited to take my theatrical interests to the next level exploring immersive media and motion capture technology.

I love to build with a variety of materials and techniques, especially discovering and innovating new techniques. For example, after taking all the jewelry classes my school offered, I started working for my jewelry teacher, exploring advanced techniques and teaching her students what I learned. I'm excited to experiment with new techniques and share them with others at Northeastern.

I toured Ryder Hall with Liana, a fifth-year student who shared insights into Northeastern’s “hustle culture” and the many programs that help students bring their ideas to life such as Scout and the co-op program. I don't just want to study in a classroom, I want to make real things in the real world, and it's clear that is a primary focus at Northeastern.

During my visit to CAMD, I was struck by how kind and welcoming the community was. For example, Paolo Ciuccarelli and Estefania Ciliotta Chehade took an hour from their day to talk to me. I even got to meet with Dean Hudson. We had a fabulous, philosophical conversation about the plasticity that is required in today’s ever-changing work environment. Honestly, I haven’t had such a warm experience and felt so at home in any other school. I am convinced that Northeastern is the right place for me.
